My art practice is based on simplicity and is rooted in nature, ease and joy. I love functional pieces that are made well. Detail, decoration and design that evokes a sense of sentimentality and comfort are my intention. I want people to interact with my artwork and connect with it on a personal level. Through pieces like your favourite mug that you want to hold every morning, or a beautiful vase or a pair of earrings that bring you joy, I hope to have my ceramic art be woven into your every day life.
Fun fact!
I love to travel and immerse myself into other cultures. During my travels I kept finding myself in nature, whether intentionally or subconsciously, and I discovered the universality of comfort that nature brings to humans all around the world. I have tried to pull this in to my work through my decoration of trees, mountains or camping inspired from my time in the mountains of Peru or Canada, the colours of many places in Latin America, or the sturdiness of family roots and hard work witnessed in Bali or Vietnam embodied in the structure and foundation of my pieces. I use these memories and adventures to inspire my ceramic art, knowing that each one is imbued with heart and determination in a literal sense through the process of making pottery, and the metaphorical sense of the natural creativity of each piece when I am making it come alive into the world.
What is your dream project?
My dream project would be an art show where there are stages of different environments and each one showcasing my work in the way that it would be woven into daily life. A mug for your morning coffee in a living room scene with flowers in a vase on the side table. A cabin scene where mugs are showcased on a cabin deck having morning coffees with one of my ceramic vases holding fresh picked wildflowers on the coffee table overlooking a lake. An office scene with someone with a mug for their coffee while typing their work reports or clinical notes. Hikers with little ceramic cocoa mugs sipping their chocolate goodness in the fresh alpine air with a beautiful mountain backdrop. This is a big vision for a dream project, but showcasing my ceramics in every day life with themes of places that are part of my life and close to heart would personalize this project in a very sentimental way for me.
