Meeting with Unexpected Delight

Ying-Yueh Chuang is a Vancouver based artist who lives a hybrid existence drawing on elements of both Taiwanese and Canadian culture. This too has been embodied in her ceramic sculptures and installations where she often amalgamates forms as diverse as sea creatures and terrestrial plants. In the work in this exhibition, she pays homage to two historical traditions, west and east, the signature Hycroft ware of Medalta in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada and the Chinese porcelain tradition of functional ware created for centuries in Jingdezhen, China. Beginning with the historical functional ware as sculptural elements for building blocks, Chuang has applied her hybrid approach, subverting, re-envisioning, reconfiguring and combined with organic forms, to offer a fresh perspective on the traditional and familiar.
