Sophie Smutchenko is a Ukrainian-Canadian fibre artist based in Prince George, BC. She is currently completing her B.Sc in Biology at the University of Northern British Columbia. Sophie describes below how she entered the world of crochet art:

A woman with short hair and wearing a collared shirt smiles as she holds up a small crochet pig. She is outside in a forest that is yellow with the changing of seasons.

“During the 2020 pandemic, I felt inspired to create a meaningful gift for my friend. Although I didn’t plan on making crochet my hobby, the joy of crafting something beautiful and authentic with my hands grew with each new project. I started my art with simple shapes like spheres and cubes. Then, I discovered how to join them together to make stuffed animals. My journey could have been smoother. I kept picking the wrong size of yarn for the wrong projects and the wrong size of hooks. But I was stubborn; I could not give up so easily. So, I kept trying again and again until I got the results I wanted. Once I did, I was confident I could create anything I wanted. This type of art is unique because it brings imagination to 3D life. The yarn became my playground, something I could control, my own little world. It shivers my mind how much I could stretch the limits of crocheting.”
