A Walk in Sunflowers

October 25, 2024 January 12, 2025

Mykola Zhuravel is an important and prolific contemporary Ukrainian artist currently residing in Toronto, Ontario. In his works, Zhuravel uses various mediums, defying conventional boundaries between painting, sculpture, performance, and installation art. He intricately weaves nature into his creations, crafting vibrant visuals that symbolise humanity’s connection to the Earth. Zhuravel explores the potential harmony between Earth and mankind, often addressing the barriers humanity has raised against such unity. Through his ambitious style, Zhuravel presents a captivating series of living images that depict a visionary utopia. By transcending mere documentation, Zhuravel adeptly blends elements of surrealistic grotesqueness and nostalgia, delving into the realms of metaphor and fantasy.

A Faded Gaze

October 25, 2024 January 12, 2025

Artists evoke emotion through the depiction of eyes and the way subjects hold their gaze towards their viewers. The way that an artist chooses to capture the gaze can dramatically change how the audience perceives the work, and the person depicted in the portrait. The use of gaze as a visual device has the ability to manipulate and challenge the understanding of the viewer. The works represented in this exhibition have been selected from Two Rivers Gallery’s permanent collection, showcasing multiple artists and the use of their chosen mediums. This exhibition aims to explore a series of figures in which the faces are distorted, faded, and blurred, either by the artist’s intention or the technique they have employed. Whether standing alone or alongside loved ones, as part of a vast landscape, or amidst a street of protesters, these subjects invite the audience to imagine the narrative and the untold stories that each piece may hold.

Opening Reception

Please join us at Two Rivers Gallery for the opening reception on Thursday, October 24 at 7:30pm for artist talk, light food, and Ukrainian folk music. This event is free and open to the public.
