Enter the realm of a child’s dream, illustrated through watercolour paintings and accompanied by haiku poetry, created and written by Prince George artist, Elizabeth Eakin. This exhibition contains original artworks from her children’s book, A BC Island Animal Dream. These works portray a colourful and quirky cast of creatures with beloved snacks, as well as haiku mentioning BC Islands, that all match their letter of the alphabet.
After spending twenty years teaching kindergarteners in French Immersion, Eakin found herself entrenched and in love with childhood curiosity and imagination. After becoming a parent, then later, a grandparent, she held tightly onto her passion for children’s education and the ability to embody it in through play and storytelling. During Eakin’s retirement, she began her paintings at the request of her grandchildren. These paintings would later inspire her idea to create a book based on letters of the alphabet.
Eakin’s works showcase her skill as both a watercolour artist, as well as a clever poet. Each artwork allows us to both learn something new about animals, foods, and places in BC. Her works allow us to ask playful questions, such as “are dragons real?”, or “what is a baby ibis and do they really eat icecream?”
Guests are welcomed to step into this playful realm and look upon beautiful and colourful artworks, as well as read her haiku, which are poems that use only seventeen syllables.
Please join us at Two Rivers Gallery for an opening reception on Thursday, February 15th, at 7:30pm in the Galleria, with an introduction by artist, Elizabeth Eakin. Light refreshments will be available for visitors to enjoy.
